Taeyang is a member of idol group Big Bang. He is among the few of idol singers who possess a good R&B voice. His first album Hot was a solid production and his performances were very impressive. The first single off the album, Prayer, resembles a typical American hip hop song. However, the second single, Look Only At Me, incorporated American R&B sounds into Korean pop sounds, which resulted in an interesting combination. The choreography was spot on and the vocal of Taeyang shines in this song.

I don’t know much about this guy Tae.1 but I guess he’s one of those underrated ballad singers. His voice is really amazing in this song. This song was aired exactly once on Arirang Pops in Seoul and I am glad I caught that episode or else I would have missed such an awesome song. The song reminds me of old-school ballad, especially those songs that appeared in Kdramas in the 90s.

Kim Bum Soo is one of the most famous ballad singers of Korea. He is known for participating in hit dramas’ soundtracks like Stairways to Heaven’s soundtrack or What Happened in Bali’s soundtrack. This song, Just with Love, is included in the soundtrack album of drama What Happened in Bali starring Jo In Sung, Ha Ji Won, So Ji Sub and Park Ye Jin. The song showcased Kim Bum Soo’s powerful vocal. He is really impressive here.

Kara is the girl group under the management of DSP Entertainment who also managed Sechskies, FinKL, Lee Hyori, SS501 and A’ST1. Kara debuted with a strong single titled “Break It” and personally I thought it was the strongest debuts among the the three girl groups who debuted at that time, including Kara, Wonder Girls and SNSD.  However, Kara’s most charismatic and talented member Sunghee left the group after that single and Kara took in 2 new members, struggling to keep up with the more popular Wonder Girls and SNSD. They had some really bad songs at first like Rock You and Pretty Girl. However, in 2009, they struck back with the massively popular song Honey, which emits a unique musical style of DSP artists. Later they released a whole new album. However, DSPE, as usual, failed to choose an appropriate title song for the album. I Wanna was a typical teenybopper song that never really stood out from the competition. But Mister, their second single off the album, created a craze in Korea. The girls did not show particularly strong vocal performances in this song but their performances were charismatic and at least Han Seungyeon and Park Gyuri managed to be impressive vocally. “Mister” boasted a catchy beat and proved once again that DSPE can actually produce good music.

I actually did not pay attention to this song other than the butt dance that Kara used to perform the song. However, I was impressed at how this song stood out so much from other idol songs when it was played during the year-end music shows.  It’s definitely catchy but not as repetitive as songs like “Gee” or “Sorry Sorry.” I think this is one of the best pop songs of 2009.

2AM is one of the rare ballad idol groups these days. They debuted in 2008 under Cube Entertainment and after their first single album, they were transferred to JYPE and continued to release another successful single “Confessions of a Friend.” Their debut song is the emotional ballad “This song.” The song showcased the members’ strong vocals and nice harmony. The sentimental piano sounds also add to the poignant mood of the song.

Lim Jung Hee is often called the Korean Alicia Keys because of her distinct voice and piano skills. She had a short but memorable career in Korea, gaining respect from music critics and fans alike. She was under JYPE entertainment and JYP decided to invest in her to cross over to the American market. Her last album released in Korea was in 2007. After that, she disappeared from the music scene. Many fans were critical of JYPE for failing to promote her in America and at the same time not letting her continue her career in Korea.

This song, Clockwork, is included in her first album released in 2005 called “Music is my life.” The soft piano sound and powerful vocal make a nice combination, evoking a lot of emotions. It’s a simple song with simple composition and arrangement but what makes it shine is Lim Jung Hee’s mesmerizing vocal skill.

I decided to compile a list of Kpop songs that I found suitable for holiday season. The song is not listed in any particular order, I just listed them as I remembered.

Number 1:

UN – A lifetime

A lifetime is included in UN’s first official album and is their first hit. Its fun melody reminds me of the 90s pop sound, which I hold very dear in my heart since I grew up with it.  The vocals are solid and the lyrics are filled with positive enthusiasm. The MV shows Kim Jung Hoon and Choi Jung Won, the two members of UN, acting goofy around each other  in a snow-filled place. Perfect for holidays.

Number 2:

2PM – Only You (Winter Special Mix)

This funky pop song offers a very relaxing feeling. The lyric talks about the great affection of love. 2PM’s boyish style adds to the charm of this song. I chose the winter special mix because it fits better with the holiday’s atmosphere (the original version and its MV are more emotional and mellow, you can check it out too). The winter mix doesn’t have an official MV but here is a really well-made fan video that showcased 2PM’s unique playful screen persona.

Number 3:

Kim Tae Woo – Love Snow

Love Snow is a remake of Kim Tae Woo’s recent hit Love Rain. I like the feeling of this song better than Love Rain, and Kim Tae Woo’s voice is just mesmerizing. The choir helped make the song more epic. The MV is very cute and showed lovely behind-the-scene activities of Kim Tae Woo.

Number 4:

Girls’ Generation/ SNSD – Kissing You

This is a very cute song with soft and sweet voices of the nine members of SNSD. The MV is also very cute with the white and pink color tone. Listening to the song and watching the MV gives us a very happy feeling.

Number 5:

TVXQ/ DBSK – Balloon

This song is a remake of an old song. DBSK gave it a more pop-ish feel and the MV showed DBSK members in hilarious costumes. This song revealed to us a different side of DBSK, whom we often saw with a more charismatic image.

Number 6:

Big Bang – Red Sunset

This song is also a remake. A legendary song by Lee Moon Sae, the song has become well-known all over Korea. Big Bang gave it a more playful feeling, adding some fun rap parts. When we listen to this song with our families during holiday season, we cannot but feel warm and happy.

Number 7:

2AM – This song

This song sounds a bit sad compared to all the songs above but I love the lyrics and the melody. It talks about giving and receiving love, which I think is a very relevant topic in holiday seasons. The MV also showed 2AM members working hard towards their debut, which makes us think of the efforts we should make to live life to the fullest.

Number 8:

Loveholic – Flowerpot

The dreamy feeling of this song makes it perfect for a holiday with your beloved ones. The lyric talks about lovers yearning for each other. The beautiful voice of Jisun really made this song an unforgettable melody.

Number 9:

Kara – Honey

Another cheerful song from girl group Kara. The song is sweet with uptempo electronic sound, which totally brings out the Christmas feeling. The cute voices of Kara members also helped to create a very happy and fulfilling mood of year end holiday.

Number 10:

SS501 – Coward

This song has a very similar feeling to UN’s A lifetime: very fun and playful. The MV showed very happy scenes of SS501 members playing with each other. This is the type of songs that you want to listen to at the end of the year when you contemplated about what you have accomplished in one year.

That’s the 10 songs that made me feel very happy when I listented to them during holiday seasons. What about you? Which song do you like?

“Please” is one of the saddest ballads, sung by one of the most beautiful vocals of Korea, Lee So Ra. The highlight of the song is the emotional voice of Lee So Ra. This song has been covered by many other great balladeers including Lee Soo Young, Lee Seung Ki and Park Hyo Shin. I personally like Lee So Ra’s version and Lee Soo Young’s version the best. Lee Soo Young did not officially release her version of the song, but she sang it in one segment of the famous variety show Xman. Check out the performances below:

This is one of the most anticipated albums of 2009 and as soon as it was released, it garnered explosive sales. With all that hype, one would wonder if this album is really good.In my opinion, the album is good but not outstanding. It is better than the normal stuff that idol groups churned out but it is certainly not a “genius” work like some people often claim.

Track 1: A Boy

The beat rocks. This song is very refreshing and it showcased GDragon’s rapping skill, which may or may not impress you. Most of GDragon’s fans would like this track, but the typical pop listener would find it hard at first to get familiar with the rapping. 4/5

Track 2: Heartbreaker

Another great song. This track is really addicting. It follows the autotune trend but GDragon surely added his own unique style to the song. The only thing I like about this song is that when I listen to it, I cannot tell whether he is singing or rapping. I think it’s suitable for his style since his normal singing voice is not something to be proud of. 4/5

Track 3: Breathe

This track follows the European dance beats. It gets boring after a while, and his rapping here is not really interesting. 3/5

Track 4: Butterfly (ft. Jin Jung)

An “alternative” track that offers something new to an album full of autotune. Slower beats and more relaxing feelings. 4/5

Track 5: Hello (ft. Dara 2NE1)

Another trendy song, but this song actually reminds me a lot of Big Bang’s earlier style, more fun and more hiphop-like. The thing I don’t like about this song is Dara’s weak voice. If we replace her with, say, Park Bom, I’m sure this song will turn out a lot better. 2/5

Track 6: Gossip Man (ft. Kim Gun Mo)

I like the melody of this track. Kim Gun Mo’s voice is so… classic. This song is somehow similar to track 5, but with much more interesting beats and rapping. 3.5/5

Track 7: Korean Dream (ft. Tae Yang)

I expected a lot of this song. But it disappointed me. What annoyed me is that they totally digitalized Tae Yang’s awesome voice. The beat is okay. GDragon’s rapping is pretty inspiring here. However the song is overall pretty boring. 3/5

Track 8: The Leaders (ft. Teddy and CL 2NE1)

This song is really interesting. I like the “GD GD Baby Baby ” part ^^ This song is more hiphop-oriented, which is different from most other songs in this album which lean towards trendy dance music. I don’t know much about Teddy and his rapping didn’t really impress me here. But CL sounds really great. 3.5/5

Track 9: She’s Gone (ft. Kush)

This song is also very fresh because it incorporates a little rockish sound. 3.5/5

Track 10: One Year Station

GDragon singing!!! Not as bad as I thought but I figured he would not want to perform this song live. 3/5

Overall:

This is a good album that really showcased GDragon’s unique style. It was also experimental in the way that GDragon challenged himself in different genres of music. Moreover, I appreciate that this album offers fresh sounds that differentiated it from other idol music in the market right now.
